Let’s be wary of false prophets, in these troubled times, when the forces of good versus evil are in constant play. Indeed it was Jesus who declared to Pontius Pilate during his trial at Jerusalem that “my kingship is not of this world; if my kingship were of the world, my servants would fight, that I might not be handed over to the Jews; but my kingship is not from the world” (Jn 18:36). Jesus then defined as the essence of his kingship witness to the truth. “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” (18:37). To this Pilate asked dismissively and sceptically, “What is truth”? (18:38). He then pragmatically chose to close an eye to the religious persecution of Jesus by allowing the accusers to have their way, even though he knew that there was no case against Jesus politically.
Pope Benedict wrote ” “Bearing witness to the truth” means giving priority to God and to his will against the interests of the world and its powers. … “”Truth is outwardly powerless in the world, just as Christ is powerless by the world’s standards; he has no legions; he is crucified. Yet in his very powerlessness, he is powerful; only thus, again and again, does truth become power” (From Jesus of Nazareth, Part Two, 2011. Ignatian Press)
